Art Deco bedroom furniture falls into two categories. The first category is made up of items that were hand crafted, produced in small numbers and available only to the very wealthy. Established furniture companies that featured designers such as Eileen Gray, Pierre Chareau, Pierre Legrain, Armand-Albert Rateau and Jean-Michel Frank designed the majority of the furniture produced during this era of art history in France. Many of the designers producing work for these companies were also architects who were involved in the process of designing many of the Art Deco buildings we are familiar with today.

Among the architects and designers creating Art Deco furniture were two standouts. Frank Lloyd Wright was an American architect during the Art Deco period and many of his designs featured furniture that he designed as well. Jacques-Emile Ruhlmann was the other furniture designer who had a major impact during this period. His furniture designs are considered to be national treasures in France and are highly prized and sought after by both international museums and collectors.

Collectible bedroom furniture items often feature ornamental mirrors, bureaus, dressing tables, armoires and beds designed in various styles such as the “Waterfall” style. Items that were designed and crafted by individual designers hold the most value, but mass-produced items are becoming sought after as well.

The Art Deco aesthetic made its way into paintings in a different manner than in other mediums. Initially, it was not necessarily defined into what we now call Art Deco, however, hints of it found their way to canvases, wood, paper and even glass as the movement progressed. Eventually, these suggestions of form developed into full representations of the Art Deco style.

Painting during the Art Deco period grew from the roots of Cubism and Constructivism and was based in the traditions of many of the Salons of the day. Much of the Art Deco painting style was also developed by illustrators working in the fashion industry and decorative arts. This led to a monumental blurring of the line between the so-called “fine arts” and “decorative arts”.

Modern Abstract Huge Wall Deco Art Oil Painting

Many of the artists associated with Art Deco painting were born in Bordeaux, France. One of the most influential of the Bordeaux painters was the self-taught André Lohte. Lohte’s themes revolved around physical reality intertwined with his own spiritual beliefs. One of Lohte’s students, Tamara de Lempicka, went on to epitomise the Art Deco movement. Her work is defined by contrasting portraits and nudes against angular planes, skyscrapers and stylised flowers. Lempicka's work also exudes a highly charged eroticism and strong feminine sensuality.

Overall, Art Deco paintings were defined by highly stylized and volumetric feminine figures, dramatic shadows highlighting expression, angles, machines and anticipation of the future. Notably, Raphael Delorme’s Cléopatre, is a perfect example of this aesthetic.

As with most paintings that are defined by a particular period, Art Deco paintings are highly collectible with their values being derived from who the artist is and the condition of the painting. These paintings blur the line between fine art, poster art and graphic design and are treasured additions to any collection.

The interwar years spanned by the Art Deco period produced highly collectible artifacts that retain and grow in their value with each passing moment. Jewellery, more specifically earrings, ear clips and ear pendants of this time period, is no different.

The jewellery houses of the 1920s embraced the Art Deco style more so than almost any other artistic medium of the period. Pure geometric shapes produced as a reaction to the fluid nature of the Art Nouveau period were the standard. Women, wearing their hair shorter than in previous times, preferred long, heavily articulated ear pendants. Precious stones, however, were utilised in many earring designs. When these stones were used, they featured the baguette cut, which complemented their highly geometrical, platinum settings. Other materials such as glass, onyx, enamel, amber resins and Bakelite were also used for creating earrings that were amazingly beautiful, but relatively economical. The entire reason for this was to create the look of wealth, yet adapt it to the requirements of fashion and affordability.

For the most part, earrings were made by the larger jewellery firms such as Boucheron, Cartier, Chaumet, Fouquet, Mauboussin, Melleria and Vever. There were exceptions to this in that individual artists such as Paul Brandt and Jean Dunand also contributed highly crafted, beautiful pieces.

Most of the earrings made during this time will bear discreet markings that show which jewellery firm or individual created them. Because of this, identification of these pieces of wearable art is generally a simple task. Vintage earrings in the Art Deco style are highly collectible and make attractive additions to any Art Deco collection.

Many designers, such as Arno Malinowski, Georg Jensen, Evald Nielsen, Harald Nielsen, Theodor Fahrner, René Lalique, Henri Vever, Alfred Dunhill and the Fouquet Family, used stamps to identify their work as well as the standard of precious metals used in their brooches. Another element of identification is also through the use of reference numbers such as those used by Jensen.

Materials such as chrome, Bakelite, silver, platinum, precious stones, glass, rhinestones, enamel and semi-precious stones such as coral and marcasite, were essential in the mass production of Art Deco brooches.

From a collector’s standpoint, region is important. Knowledge that the majority of French Art Deco brooches were made in Paris is immensely significant. Original boxes that feature the designer or retailer add to the value of these pieces. For the most part, designs that were created in the flashy Hollywood style of Art Deco are less popular unless they hold some type of attachment to celebrity. In particular, demand is generally limited to Art Deco or jewellery collectors and the value of each piece often depends on attribution and current fashions.

Art Deco, originally known as Les Arts Décoratifs et Industriels, features streamlined geometrics, stylized figures and plant life. Art Glass from this period is highly representative of this style and many of the mass-produced flawless pieces are highly valuable to collectors.

During the Art Deco period, the engraved glass styles from the late 19th century were revived and restylised using new techniques. The development of new techniques is one of the features of Art Glass from this period. One of these, the “Graal” technique was developed by superimposing layers of colored glass that were etched or carved with relief patterns. Another technique that became very popular, due to the fact that it allowed for the mass production of Art Deco Glass, was pate-de-verre. Hot metal molds were also used for the mass production of Art Deco glass. This technique was utilised in every form of the art, from glass jewellery to architecture.

Art Deco glass was used in many ways, most notably lighting, perfume bottles, table glass and windows. While majority of the demand for the glass was in the vast U.S. market, most of it was produced in Europe. Steuben Glassworks founded by Edward Carder, which became the Art Glass division of Corning Glassworks, Daum Company in Nancy, France and the Orrefors Factory in Sweden were producers meeting this demand. Art Deco vases owe their lineage to 19th century glass blowers who experimented with new methods of creating textures, colours and patterns. Epitomised by graceful arcs and geometric shapes, the Art Deco movement has continued to be one of the most recognisable and popular forms of art from the 20th century. With its emphasis on geometry, line-quality and colour, it is surprising that a substantial figural movement grew from this art form. Also surprising are the large number of Art Deco figurines that are available on the market today and that in some cases, they hold substantial value for the serious collector.

Art Deco figurines were some of the first ceramic items that were mass-produced. However, in many cases, the poor quality of these mass-produced figures, limited their value. Figures that are found today can easily be identified as Art Deco by their themes and materials. While any medium could have been used for these figures, the most common were stoneware, ivory, bronze and gold. Many were created using a technique called chryselephantine, which is simply the use of carved pieces of ivory and sheets of gold leaf.
