Art Deco Pottery
The Art Deco movement is one of the most prolific within the history of art. This movement featured a diverse mix of styles and was a foundational part of 20th century art and architecture. This movement epitomized the balance between form and function and was adopted heavily into the decorative arts including architecture, industrial design and graphic design. It also was featured prominently in the visual arts in painting, film, fashion and most notably, ceramics and pottery.
Art Deco pottery, since it was created in countries around the world like Belgium, Austria and England, broke away from the standard Art Deco powerhouses France and America. While France maintained its status as a leader in the production of Art Deco items, Art Deco pottery in the United States was more of a rarity.

Ceramics created in the Art Deco motif generally carry with them the same classic blends of swooping curves and straight lines, but many times will contain organically styled humans or animals more reminiscent of the Art Nouveau period which favored flowing plant-like lines and less geometric shapes.
Art Deco pottery is highly sought after as a collectible. Because of the nature of ceramic-ware, there are fewer examples available on the market. The quality of surviving pieces, however, is of the highest standard and art lovers and collectors alike covet single pieces by artists such as Georges Tecqmenne, Raymond Henri Chevallier, Charles Catteau and Gmunder Keramik. Despite the fact that there are fewer examples of Art Deco pottery, there are some sets available on the market today that feature multiple pieces.
Connoisseurs and collectors will appreciate the level of detail that heralds nearly all Art Deco pottery design. It is just these details that make Art Deco ceramics worth the effort in ensuring their care and long life.
