Art Deco Posters
Art Deco, in all of its forms, is probably most recognizable in architecture and poster design. Because posters were mass-produced, they were widely available to most people during the Art Deco time period from the 1920s to the 1950s. However, because of their fragility, exemplified by cheap paper that deteriorated easily and their expendability, Art Deco posters designed by famous artists of the movement and in good condition, are both rare and highly collectible. Paintings used to create the posters are the rarest and are as highly collectible as most fine art pieces.
Posters in this category are easily recognisable due to their themes of idealised luxury, stylised geometric shapes and figures and the illusion of dynamic motion. This art form is also closely related to one of its predecessors, the Constructivist movement, which carries with it many of the same characteristics.

Art Deco posters are wonderful additions to any collection. While there is a level of rarity, these posters are more readily available than single paintings by famous artists of the day. Reprints of Art Deco posters are also easily accessible to those who are on a budget. However, for the collector, only original paintings, limited editions, artist proofs or signed lithographs will do, as they are the most valuable.
Artists such as Alphonse Mucha and Cassandre, exemplify the Art Deco style, although Mucha’s style is much closer to Art Nouveau. Many of Cassandre’s posters show the ideal of luxury travel that was available for those who could afford it and his style of work heralds all of the characteristics of Art Deco poster art.
Art Deco posters can provide just the right touch to any room. They are “artistic” enough to be enjoyed and critiqued, yet simple enough to add a sophisticated level of decoration to a room.
