Art Deco Jewellery
The bold colours and solid geometric style of the Art Deco period has touched everything from architecture to painting. In fact, this movement has continued to influence many of the items used in daily life. One area that has seen more of the effects of Art Deco style is jewellery.
Art Deco jewellery is one of the more accessible and practical forms of the Art Deco movement. The fact that these small and often colourful pieces of artwork can be worn makes them that much more appealing to collectors and laypersons alike.
While many of the pieces of jewellery made during the Art Deco period used standard materials such as precious stones, gold and silver, the Great Depression of the 1930s forced many jewellery makers to use materials that would allow for greater mass production and lower costs. One such material was Bakelite. This hard, resin-based substance was perfectly suited for the creation of Art Deco jewellery as it was easily machined and carved. This led some of the world’s finest artists to use it as a medium for their work.
From a collector's standpoint, Art Deco jewellery pieces are highly sought after; especially those created with Bakelite. Many collectors are able to identify artists based on the particular style of carving or a particular theme that runs through many pieces. Some of these artists, such as Jean Dunand, Gérard Sandoz, Raymond Templier and Réne Lalique are easily identified by the pieces they have created.
Art Deco jewellery is a perfect introduction to collectibles even for the budget conscious. There is one caveat, though; even with values continuing to go up on many of the beautiful examples of Art Deco jewellery, the desire to hold these pieces of artwork and wear them is very nearly irresistible.
