Art Deco Chairs
Strength and optimism are prominent features of the Art Deco movement, which rose to popularity in the early part of the 20th century. As recently as February of 2009, a chair from the collection of the late Yves Saint Laurent was auctioned at Christie’s of Paris for the record sum of €21.9 million.
Art Deco chairs were built using many different materials. Oak, chrome, leather and rosewood are some examples. Chairs built during this time period also have another substantial thing in their favor: they never go out of style. During the entire 20th century, while other items from different periods in art history have gone in and out of favour; Art Deco pieces have continued to sustain and increase their value from year to year. Even more, this is despite the fact that the Art Deco movement covered one of the shortest time periods in the history of art.
The value of Art Deco chairs and other furniture can, quite simply, be astronomical. Collectors in the market for these items typically pay thousands for one piece and many auction houses report expectations of prices in the tens of thousands that in reality end up going for six-figure amounts. In addition to that, Art Deco styles are becoming even more popular with those who generally have little interest in one artistic style over the other. Indeed, it seems that the Art Deco chair is enjoying its own version of a Renaissance.
